Gain practical experience and apply what you’ve learned in the classroom to real-world scenarios. Internships provide a structured opportunity to integrate academic knowledge with hands-on training. An internship not only strengthens your resume but also builds the skills and confidence needed for a successful career.

Internships are open to both full-time and part-time students who have completed [SH1] the necessary academic coursework in their area of study. While internships are highly encouraged for all students, requirements vary by program. Internships are required for graduation in majors like Human Services and Computer Science. For other majors such as Business Management internships are offered as elective courses.

How Does it Work?

The internship consists of 112-300 hours of employment and is offered as a 3-4 credit course depending on your major or concentration. We strongly advise you to speak with your academic advisors before starting the internship process.

Career Services can assist you in exploring potential internship sites; though we encourage you to take initiative and find your own internships (there are many internship postings on handshake!). All internship placements must be approved by the University before you begin.

Why do an Internship?

The internship applies what you learn in class to real world experience, putting your “textbook” knowledge into practice. You’ll develop an understanding of what it is like to work with other employees and balance study, work and family responsibilities. You’ll have the opportunity to network in the field with industry professionals. The work experience looks good on your resume when applying for a job after graduation.

Rules and Procedures

Students must notify Career Services before starting an internship. Each intern will be assigned an on-site supervisor to determine, assign, and monitor tasks directly related to their field of study.

If an internship is terminated or dropped before its completion, the student should notify Career Services. The student should then set up an appointment with an academic advisor at his/her site to complete the proper paperwork and drop the course.

Student Prerequisites and Requirements

To be eligible for the Internship Program, students must:

  • Earn 45+ credits (Associate’s degree) or 90+ credits (Bachelor’s degree).
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (3.0+ preferred by most organizations).
  • Provide an updated resume and cover letter.

All requirements must be met 5 weeks before the semester begins. To pass the internship course, students must complete all assignments and requirements on time.
