Medical Assistant Major Requirements (30 credits)

GRSN 101 - Medical Terminology (2 credits)

This course is designed to provide each student with an understanding of medical terminology. An introduction to the origins of medical terminology will also be assessed. Word building will be introduced, and abbreviation and symbols will be discussed.

GPHN 233 - Biomedical Ethics (3 credits)

This course is designed to provide a fundamental background in ethics. With both the historical and philosophical basis ethical behavior will be discussed. Ethical issues and dilemmas found in clinical practice will be examined. Legal terminology, concepts and principles will be presented. The ASRT scope of practice, misconduct, malpractice, and other legal and professional standards will be discussed.

GRTN 111 - Patient Care I (4 credits)

This course introduces the concepts and techniques of patient assessment and patient care. The student will demonstrate proficiency in measuring vital signs, oxygen administration, aseptic techniques, venipuncture and taking a complete patient medical history. Principles of infection control, nosocomial infections, standard precautions, barrier protection for blood and body fluid exposures and isolation precautions are also included. This course has been designed to meet the needs of radiographers.

GMAN 150 - Medical Office Management (3 credits)

Medical Office Management discusses the role and function of the administrative office medical assistant. This course teaches concepts in records management, receptionist responsibilities, banking accounting and booking for the medical office.

GMAN 240 - Laboratory Procedures (4 credits)

This course will teach students to follow universal precautions in the medical laboratory or office. Students will be able to perform the most common laboratory procedures used in the medical office such as phlebotomy, finger stick, and different types of blood analysis, urinalysis and microbiology procedures. At the end of this course, students will be able to assist in some specialty procedures.

GMAN 110 - Medical Billing and Coding (3 credits)

Medical Billing and Coding provides an overview of the basics understanding medical insurance forms and their use in the medical office. Students will learn about legal issues, form preparation and problem solving insurance claims. Upon the completion of the course students will be able to navigate electronic health records systems and practice management software, perform billing and collection procedures and process insurance claims.

GMAN 225 - Clinical Procedures (4 credits)

Upon the completion of the course, students will be able to assist providers with specialty examinations. Assist in specialty procedures including minor surgery. Teach self-examinations, disease management and health promotion.

GMAN 275 - Medical Assisting Externship 3 (4 credits)

This course is designed to allow students to apply knowledge and skills gained during the program to practical applications in field. Students will gain first-hand experience in a practical setting, while performing assigned tasks. Student will be required to reflect on the experience through use of a journal. Upon the completion of the course students will be able adequately perform tasks under the supervision of a preceptor. Students will meet the expectations of the site and act in a professional manner.

GCAN 220 - Communication and Public Policy (3 credits)

This course is designed to introduce communication techniques for specific workspaces. Upon the completion of the course students will be able to effectively communicate in the workplace, use professional language and etiquette and use technology specific to certain work environments

GSSN 246 - Nutrition and Human Development (3 credits)

This course offers a specialized review of the principles of sound nutrition and the effects of diet on personal well-being. Environmental, social, physical, and psychological reasons underlying poor diet are examined.
