Professor Verbit is a sociologist who specializes in the sociology of religion and contemporary Jewish life. He was president of the Association for the Social Scientific Study of Jewry, is a fellow of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, and has directed the North American Jewish Data Bank and the Interuniversity Fellowship Program in Jewish Studies, among numerous other academic projects in the Jewish community. He also served as national chairman of American Professors for Peace in the Middle East, chairman of the Zionist Academic Council, and in several other positions in the Jewish community.
