In just 13 credits, you'll gain the knowledge and hands-on experience necessary to work in any of these CDA-accredited early childhood settings:

  • Infant-toddler programs.
  • Preschool classrooms.
  • Family childcare settings.
  • Home visitor programs.

You'll also complete coursework that counts toward an undergraduate degree, giving you a leg up if you decide to continue on to your bachelor's in education.

"Earning your CDA isn’t just a credential—it’s your first step into a meaningful career shaping young minds. This nationally recognized certification opens doors, builds confidence, and sets the foundation for lifelong impact in early childhood education. Professors at Touro University are committed to walking alongside you every step of the way, offering the support, guidance, and real-world insight you need to succeed.” - Professor Nicole Crane, Lead Instructor, CDA Credentialing Program

Skills and Support That Set You Up For Success

You'll take four courses, each corresponding to a CDA requirement. With NYSCAS' small class sizes and caring faculty, you'll benefit from personal attention as you cover essential topics like:

  • Principles and methodology of early childhood education.
  • How children learn, develop, and grow.
  • Working with parents and families.
  • Strategies to support children with diverse needs.

In each class, you'll learn from professors who understand what it takes to succeed because they've worked in early childhood classrooms themselves. That's why they intentionally designed your final course to include a workshop that helps you:

  • Create your professional portfolio.
  • Document your required work hours.
  • Schedule your CDA verification visit.
  • Prepare for the CDA exam.

This one-on-one support sets you up with the structure you need to complete your studies, pass the CDA exam, and advance in your teaching career.

CDA Requirements

To start the CDA program at NYSCAS, you need a high school diploma or GED and you must already be working in early childhood education.

There are also several requirements to get the credential. In order to take the CDA exam, you need to:

  • Be currently employed at a licensed program that serves children from birth to 5 years old.
  • Have 3 years of on-the-job experience.
  • Complete 480 hours of supervised fieldwork.

Hands-on Experience with Expert Supervision

As part of your CDA requirements, you'll need to do 480 hours of supervised fieldwork with young children and their families. Since you're already working in early childhood education, you can do this fieldwork at your current workplace.

Your supervisor will guide you through the fieldwork process, making sure you get the practical experience you need for the CDA while meeting the everyday needs of your job.

A Pathway to Your Bachelor's Degree

The 13 credits you complete for the CDA program can be applied toward an undergraduate degree at NYSCAS, helping you save time and money on a college education.

Many students start with the CDA to gain confidence and see how they handle the demands of college coursework.

Others get their CDA first to move up at work, then return later for their bachelor's degree. Either approach works, and NYSCAS supports you every step of the way.

The CDA is also part of recognized career pathways in early childhood education that set you up for leadership roles and advanced degrees.

Flexible Study Options

We understand that most CDA students are balancing work and school. NYSCAS' program is designed to fit your needs:

  • Evening and weekend options.
  • Courses can be taken fully online, on zoom, or in person.
  • Small class sizes with personal attention.
  • Support from professors who understand your work commitments.
  • Options to start in fall, spring, or summer semesters.
