AI-enabled personal computers (AI PCs) are transforming work as we know it! With AI now integrated into smartphones and laptops, #NYSCAS Computer Science Professor Satchit Hedge explains how these innovations are more than just upgrades.
💬 Prof. Hedge notes that AI PCs have the addition of neural processing units (NPUs): “NPUs are dedicated processing units on larger system-on-chips that are designed specifically for accelerating neural network operations and AI tasks, which makes handling computation-heavy tasks such as speech recognition, background blurring, video editing, and similar such processes and features much more efficient.”
Hedge says that computers can now run AI assistants directly on the device, manage and process large amounts of data, and even customize and fine-tune AI models.
With giants like Intel and Apple stepping in, AI PCs could soon be essential to productivity, personalization, and security. Are you ready to embrace the AI PC era? 🖥️✨Dr. Robin Brooks Ishler, who teaches political science at #NYSCAS, recently attended the American Political Science Association Conference in Philadelphia. @apsanet is the largest political science conference in the United States! Journalist, social media influencer, and multi-talented powerhouse Emily Austin served as the keynote speaker at our commencement ceremony last month! 🎓✨ Emily, a NYSCAS class of 2024 graduate, shared her inspiring journey, emphasizing the importance of persistence and self-determination.
“There were times where I was rejected from opportunities that I thought I well deserved, and there were times where people would dwell on my age and gender over my talent. But with hard work and persistence, I realized that although I didn’t have the right door open for me, I could decide to build the door myself and then I walked through it.”
Emily highlighted how NYSCAS’ flexible schedule and supportive professors helped her balance her professional dreams and academic excellence. “As many of us will now move ahead on our chosen career paths, we must always carry with us the values of integrity, humility, and a commitment to excellence. Let us strive not only for personal success but also for the betterment of society and the world at large. Let us serve as beacons of hope, catalysts for change, and champions of justice and equality.”
#CommencementCeremony #NYSCAS #EmilyAustin @emily.austinStudent Spotlight! Meet Stacey Borriello, named to the Dean’s List for the Fall 2024 semester! Stacey's career dream is to become a special education teacher. She’s graduating next month with her associate degree, then plans to continue her journey via Touro’s Honors Teacher Preparation Pathway (TPP) program, where she'll earn both a bachelor's degree in early childhood education from #NYSCAS and a master's degree from Touro's Graduate School of Education (@tourogse)!
“I’ve been teaching in daycare for over 10 years,” Stacey said. My mother graduated from Touro University at 52 and had a fantastic experience here. When I gave birth to my daughter, I knew I wanted to return to school, too. Since joining NYSCAS, I’ve been grateful for the opportunity to study remotely and for the flexibility that allows me to continue my education as a full-time working mom.”
“This is hard work,” she said. “It’s not easy to balance work, school, and motherhood, but my husband has been very supportive of me, and my daughter is proud of her mom. But I know working in special education is my calling, and I’m more determined than ever to make it happen.”Reflecting on an insightful Faculty Development Day at #NYSCAS! 📚💡 Last week, our faculty gathered to delve into the dynamic rise of artificial intelligence tools in academia and beyond. Keynote speaker Dr. Shlomo Engelson Argamon—Touro University’s Associate Provost for Artificial Intelligence—captivated the audience with a discussion on incorporating AI tools responsibly, fostering critical thinking amidst the latest technological advancements, and how these changes are transforming the college experience as a whole. Looking forward to more opportunities to gather and learn together!
Alum Spotlight: Mark Boone landed at Touro University’s #NYSCAS with quite some professional experience under his belt. As an IT business owner, he decided that a bachelor’s degree in business management would take him to the next level in his career. “I’d been in IT for years, and I wanted to perfect my craft and deepen my knowledge of the business realm,” he said. “I chose NYSCAS because of its convenient locations and reputation, and I’m very glad I made that decision.”
🎓 Mark was particularly impressed with Touro’s faculty. He was touched by how they understood the reality of working students and the clarity and inspiration they brought into their classrooms. Overall, his positive experience shaped his belief that Touro only hires the very best professors and advisors.
🎯 “Some people might say, I want to go back to school, but I don’t have the time. Or they had a negative experience at a different school. But Touro definitely made it very easy for me to pursue an education while working full-time.” Mark says he feels empowered by the knowledge and skills he gained at NYSCAS, and says he runs his business more effectively thanks to the education he received.Meet Jessica Schechter, who graduated from Touro University’s #NYSCAS with a bachelor’s in Information Technology in 2022! Jessica now works at PwC, the prestigious multinational professional services firm, where she is a Penetration Tester Consultant for many different clients. Jessica’s first introduction to the world of tech was the Girls Who Code club at her high school.
“I started applying to full-time positions during my second to last semester at NYSCAS,” she said. “I was introduced to the field of cybersecurity through Touro’s cybersecurity summer program at Ariel University in Israel, which I attended two summers in a row. The summer before my senior year I did an internship at Standard Industries, where I was a cybersecurity analyst.”
Jessica says she loved her time at Touro University. “One thing that stood out to me was how devoted the professors were to their students’ success. I remember having trouble with one of my programming classes, and I Zoomed with the instructor for over an hour so he could help me with the material.”
Her advice for current students? “Set goals for yourself; when those goals seem challenging, that’s when you should push yourself even harder; you’ll feel so proud of what you didn’t think you could accomplish. And ask questions, be curious! If you don’t know something, look it up. The industry is constantly evolving, so we must do the same.”International Student Spotlight! 🇵🇪 Meet Wendy, who came to NYC from Peru to pursue a degree at NYSCAS’ two-year sonography program. “In Peru, I started volunteering with kids with disabilities when I was 15 years old, and I knew I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare or medicine.” When a friend told her about Touro University, she was impressed with the school’s commitment to offering students career counseling.
“As a foreign student and a non-native English speaker, at the beginning it was hard,” Wendy told us. “But I got all the support I needed to succeed. My professors were tough, but they were great. The sonography program is short and effective. The school offers so many resources—tutoring, libraries, everything. And the environment is nice, you can feel it as soon as you walk in.”
Wendy has now completed her clinical hours and has been working part-time while in school. Now she plans to embark on a career in sonography… but that’s not it! She also plans to start pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biology at NYSCAS next year. Good luck!Meet one of the new players for the Touro Tornadoes, Slugger Vidal! 🏀 Slugger was born and raised in New York City and is studying business at #NYSCAS. “As I was preparing to graduate from high school, I didn’t think college was an option for me, but my English teacher thought otherwise. He encouraged me to pursue an associate degree, after which I became a preschool teacher. Teaching was an amazing experience, but it wasn’t my calling. One day, a NYSCAS admissions counselor visited my preschool, and I learned about the school and its undergraduate programs. #NYSCAS is where I fell in love with social work and pursued a bachelor’s in psychology. Today, I work as a Health Home Supervisor at the New York Foundling, one of New York City’s oldest and largest child welfare agencies. This is by far the best job I’ve ever had. I’d never expected to pursue this career, but NYSCAS truly showed me the way. I now also have a master’s in psychology from Touro Worldwide, and one day I hope to complete a PsyD, as well.”
Thank you, Erica, for generously sharing your inspiring journey with us! 🌈Alum Spotlight! Max recently started a new role as a commercial mortgage broker. His formula for success? Hard work, determination, and networking.
“The harder I work, the greater the potential rewards, which makes the role both challenging and exciting for me,” he says. “Sometimes, just picking up the phone and asking someone if they’re looking to purchase a property will lead to a deal!”

Is it possible to get a college degree while working a night shift? Manuel Colon is the living proof. Inspired by his mother, who had just obtained her associate degree from NYSCAS, Manuel decided to pursue his dreams and enroll in our Cybersecurity and Network Administration program.
While studying at #NYSCAS, Manuel worked a 12 a.m. - 8 a.m. shift as a security guard every night. He strategically chose to limit the number of classes he took each semester and made the most out of the school’s resources, such as the Learning Resource & Writing Center. As he says: “Know what you can handle. Balance your load. It might take you a little longer; you might pay a little more. But that’s what I needed to do to graduate.”
Manuel graduated in 2020 and now works as a desktop support engineer for the Excess Line Association of New York (ELANY) and as an IT analyst for Lazard Asset Management. He and his mother are the only members of their family with college degrees; she is currently completing her master’s degree in Forensic Psychology from Touro University Worldwide!
For those students who feel strongly about getting their degree but are worried about it, Manuel encourages them not to let anything—even a seemingly impossible schedule—stop them. “I feel like if I could do it, anybody can.”Alum Spotlight: Sofia’s first experience in higher education was at a community college, which almost marked the end of her college career. “It was difficult to get into classes, and I didn’t feel supported at all,” she told us. Disheartened by this experience, she chose to drop out of her courses. “I said, I’m never going back to college. But I knew that I wanted to do it.” Her family urged her to seek out a new school; her mother in particular, who got a college degree as an immigrant, inspired her to try again. That’s when she found Touro University’s #NYSCAS.
“Touro is different,” she explained. “It’s more like a community. It’s friendly. People ask you, ‘What can I do to help you succeed? How can I get you to the next step in your life and career?’ My faculty really cares about the students. If I ever needed help, I wouldn’t hesitate to ask for it.” At NYSCAS, with the guidance of the faculty and academic advisors, Sofia chose a new career path and successfully graduated in Business Administration and Management. “It was all worth it,” she says now.
Today, Sofia is a working mom of two boys. She is a Service Coordinator at Shulamith School for Girls of Brooklyn, where she oversees a team of providers. To other students, her advice is: “Take the time to listen to yourself and what you're passionate about.”Meet Daniel Furchin, who graduated from our program in Cybersecurity and Network Administration in 2022 and swiftly landed a job as a Security Operations Center Analyst at Healthfirst, a major health insurance company. Daniel said he was always interested in computers and IT; after speaking to a friend who had completed the same program at #NYSCAS, he decided to enroll. While he was in school, he was also working as an IT Technician at Touro, an experience that helped him build his resumé and get his career started.
Daniel’s 3 tips to land your dream job after graduation are:
1️⃣ Work while you’re studying, even if the job is part-time, so you’ll have experience on your resume;
2️⃣ Start applying for jobs a semester before you graduate; it’s a lengthy process, and sometimes there is a full month between rounds of interviews;
3️⃣ Use the school’s resources like Career Services to improve your resume and learn about opportunities and career fairs.“I’m currently completing my undergraduate degree at NYSCAS, where I was able to take three graduate courses at no additional charge, earning credits I can use later when I’m in business school.” Meet Chaya Kittner, a NYSCAS student who’s taken advantage of our MBA Pathway in partnership with Touro University’s Graduate School of Business. “Touro’s a great choice,” she says. “My professors have always been nice and understanding; if I missed a class, they would call me and make sure I was fine. During the pandemic, we became a family. I’ve made many friends at school, everyone is always helping each other out.”
Ashanta is hoping to continue to study even after graduating from NYSCAS; her dream is to become a speech pathologist. “I know it’s hard, but I feel that, if I continue doing what I’m doing, I can make it.” 💪🏾🎉 New Beginnings at #NYSCAS! 📚 Today marks the start of a new semester! Student Spotlight! Max Nussbaum came to Touro University to study Finance and is graduating in June, having already secured a full-time position as a commercial mortgage broker at a brokerage and advisory firm. “It’s exactly the type of job I was hoping to find,” he told us. “I went to college to embark on a successful career in the financial world, and I feel like I found what I was looking for.” Max expressed his gratitude for #NYSCAS’ flexible schedule, which allowed him to maintain a good life balance while in school.

Alum Spotlight! 🤓 While growing up in Brooklyn, Rena Shilian knew from an early age that she wanted to work in a healthcare-related field. “When I started wearing glasses, going to the eye doctor was always exciting. I was amazed by the equipment they used and the unique, impactful connections the doctors can make with their patients,” she explained. So when the time came to go to college, she chose to pursue a bachelor’s degree in biology at #NYSCAS, with her eyes set on #optometry school. 👀
“What truly solidified my desire to pursue a career in optometry was the well-rounded experience I got in the eyecare field,” she said. Still, despite her stellar focus, juggling school while working two jobs was not easy. Fortunately, Touro University’s flexible course schedule made it all possible: “If there was a specific class I could not attend, there was always an option for me to take it at a different time or location. Additionally, the small class size makes it possible to get to know your peers and faculty. The faculty’s dedication to student success was evident in the classroom and beyond.”
Rena is currently a second-year student at SUNY College of Optometry. Good luck with your studies and future career! For more than a century, SCO Family of Services has been an organization that delivers human services to children, families, and people in need. Adding to that legacy, the non-profit organization has just launched an exciting new partnership with Touro University that will support its employees in pursuing higher education. Last month, an inaugural group of employees registered for the spring semester at #NYSCAS and are now officially en route to a college degree!
“Touro University’s willingness to assist me every step of the way as I pursue an academic education in early childhood education reassures me that the school cares about the success of its students,” said Natalie Girvan, an SCO employee.
Touro’s Tiffany Cohen, who coordinates the initiative, said: “We’re looking forward to working with one of New York City’s largest human services organizations. This will be very beneficial for everyone in the community. From speaking with the students, it’s clear how excited they are for their future.
Good luck to the new students! In the photo, from right to left: Mariah Coleman, Tashalee Richards, Natalie Girvan. @SCOFamily“I’ll hold Touro forever in my heart.” 💖 This is how Barbara Jimenez, a recent graduate of NYSCAS, looks back at her time at the school. She credits Touro’s faculty members for helping her accomplish what she used to think would be impossible: going back to school and pursuing her dream of becoming a social worker.
Having been a teen mom who dropped out of high school, Barbara was used to being told that she would never amount to anything: “At some point, I did believe it. But then as I started getting older, I thought wait a minute, I have a purpose. I want to help people—people like me who come from unfortunate circumstances, maybe kids from my own community.” So she completed her GED and associate degree and started working as an intake coordinator for a mental health clinic. Ultimately, though, she wanted to work in a school setting.
When she was laid off during the pandemic and took a remote job, she realized she had a unique opportunity to continue her education. She chose #NYSCAS because of its renowned program in human services and the possibility to take the coursework online from home. “At the orientation, I met some of the professors, and everyone was so welcoming. I got a positive vibe from everyone” she recalls. “I thought, that’s the type of environment I want to be in.”
Barbara successfully completed her degree earlier this year, and now she’s planning to pursue a master’s in social work; she’s looking forward to making a lasting impact on children, parents, and communities at large. In the meantime, she’s working at a mental health clinic and at a school for children with autism. Good luck, Barbara!International Student Spotlight! 🇮🇳 Meet Kirti, who is originally from India and came to the U.S. to pursue an education in Business Management and Administration. “My father makes cotton and silk from raw materials and sells it to other companies,” he explained. “I want to take his business to an international level and supply clothing material to brands all over the world. I knew it would help me to get a qualified degree and a wide range of experiences for when I go back to India.”
Two of the things Kirti loves the most about #NYSCAS is the attention the school gives international students and the smaller size of his classes: “I can get a lot more direct interaction with my professors,” he said. “The environment is very multicultural, with students from many different countries.”
“Touro University’s NYSCAS is a really good option for anyone looking to get a quality education in a really good location. It’s really convenient if you don’t have a car, has a really good environment, the staff are really friendly, and the tuition fees are budget-friendly. If you’re considering Touro, don’t think twice.”Alum Spotlight! 🪥 🦷 Jacob Buchinger started considering a career in dentistry as a child, and began to research the profession while applying to college: “I had an interest in healthcare and biology and found dentistry combined my passion with the opportunity to help people improve their oral health,” he told us. At #NYSCAS, he built a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, and beyond: “NYSCAS provided an excellent academic background and the professors helped ensure we were prepared for the Dental Admission Test (DAT) exam.”
Now, as a third-year student at @tourocollegeofdentalmedicine, Jacob is learning what it’s like to practice dentistry in the real world. “It’s a thrill to work directly with patients after spending my first two years in classes and practicing in the simulation lab.” 🔗 As always, head to the link in bio to read his story.

While in school, Abheri—who is the mother of a 10-year-old girl, Arushi—worked as a lead teacher at a public school in Brooklyn, took part in the work-study program at Touro, and was a member of the Psi Chi honors society in psychology.
Abheri’s success record doesn’t end here. This coming fall, she will be starting her graduate studies at Hofstra University in Long Island, where she will be attending the School-Community PsyD program, a degree to become psychology practitioners in school and community settings. Alum Spotlight! Meet Casey Winderbaum, who is transforming education for neurodivergent children and children with learning disabilities with her own company, Casey’s Special Education Services. Offering personalized tutoring tailored to individual needs, she’s already helped many children requiring special education make significant progress.
Casey graduated from Touro with a degree in special education in 2021 before pursuing her master’s. At #NYSCAS, she built lasting relationships with the faculty and learned innovative teaching methods that now inspire her work. She focuses on both academic skills and emotional development and has already built a team of 21 teachers. To students interested in entrepreneurship, she says: “Always have a very clear tangible plan in place and outline steps on how you’re going to execute it. Without those clearly defined steps, an idea is just an idea and not a plan.”

Balancing the demands of being a full-time working mom, she was working as a special education paraprofessional in a public school in Brooklyn. One day, a teacher who had been observing her dedication and skill in working with children with special needs told her: “You have a gift for teaching, and you love children. You should become a teacher.”
Encouraged by her colleague, she began exploring the possibility of pursuing a college education. One day, while driving home to Far Rockaway, she saw a Touro University billboard on the highway and took it as a sign. She reached out to an admissions counselor and since then, she hasn’t looked back. In June, Takenya is graduating with her associate degree, and she’s already been accepted into the Honors Teacher Preparation Pathway (TPP) program, which will allow her to begin her master’s at @TouroGSE while completing her bachelor’s.
“At first, I felt self-conscious about going back to school, and I was afraid I would not fit in as an older student. But all those fears faded the moment I started taking classes at NYSCAS,” Takenya said. “I’m grateful to two professors in particular, William Lewis and Marina Meshman.”
One area Takenya fell in love with while at NYSCAS is American Sign Language. “It opened up a new world for me, and it’s allowed me to better communicate with a little girl at my school. In the coming years, I definitely want to keep studying ASL and promote it among children.”From Ukraine to New York via Touro’s MBA Pathway Program! 🇺🇦 🇺🇲 👩🏻💼 When Olena Kostenchuk moved to the United States from Ukraine with her two kids, she had one problem: she didn’t speak a word of English. Back home, Olena was a lawyer, but in the U.S., she had to reinvent herself. Thanks to her love for learning, she dived in and began studying English, hoping that she would someday speak and understand enough to return to college. One year later, Olena visited the Neptune Avenue location of Touro University’s #NYSCAS in Brooklyn and decided to pursue a degree in Human Services. What followed was beyond what she could have hoped for.
As she began her college education in the U.S., her advisor at NYSCAS asked Olena whether she was interested in participating in the school’s Work-Study program. “I was overwhelmed,” she recalls. “On the one hand, it was a dream; on the other hand, I was concerned that the language barrier would be too big of an obstacle.” She took an ESL course and began working in the financial aid office while studying. “Step by step, my English improved significantly,” she said. “A year ago, my supervisor told me about a job opportunity in the bursar office at the Times Square campus. I was hired as a full-time employee, and I’ve been working there since then. I can’t stress enough what a dream this is for me.”
Olena is about to complete her bachelor’s degree, and she’s already taking three graduate courses at @tourogsb, thanks to the Accelerated MBA Pathway Program at NYSCAS. She credits Professor Charles Priolo for the support and encouragement he’s given her over the years, and she’s hoping to continue with an MBA after she graduates from NYSCAS. “My advice for other students who are not native English speakers is: push yourself, start as soon as you can, and you’ll see improvements every day.”Faculty Spotlight: Meet Dr. Robin Brooks Ishler, who joined Touro University’s #NYSCAS faculty as an Assistant Professor of Political Science last summer! Dr. Ishler joins us from sunny California, where he pursued a Ph.D. in Political Science at the University of California, Irvine. Before that, he obtained a master’s from the London School of Economics and a bachelor’s from the University of California, Berkeley. In his second semester at Touro, he is already a beloved faculty member among our student body.
WHAT HE LOVES ABOUT NYSCAS: “The student-centered culture; you can see how committed the faculty is to helping students achieve their outcomes. I really enjoy the small class size: the seminar-like format is a prime environment for learning, as it allows me to interact with each student and engage them in dialogue, which would not be possible in a larger setting.”
WHAT HE TEACHES: “I’m teaching political science and history classes, including U.S. Government, U.S. History, International Organizations in the World, and Emergence of the Modern World, among others. I see that students enjoy engaging in debates and simulation activities. It’s also been a privilege to introduce international students to our country’s history.”
WHAT HE LOVES ABOUT LIVING IN NYC: “I’m a big fan of walking cities! I love the community and diversity aspects of living here, and the opportunity to make friends from all over the world. Although I do miss my car on occasion!”Meet Emin Oruj, class of 2019, originally from the vibrant city of Baku, in Azerbaijan. A few years after moving to the US, Emin decided to embark on his college journey at Touro University’s #NYSCAS, where he pursued an undergraduate degree in Computer Science. “Touro University not only provided me with a quality education,” he told us, “but also introduced me to a wonderful community of people, some of whom have become lifelong friends.”
“While I was studying at Touro, I took the opportunity to intern in technical support at Touro’s nursing school. This experience paved the way for a part-time position at Touro’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. With the support of my professors, I was able to start my career in IT. After graduation, I secured a full-time position at Yeshivah Of Flatbush School, where I delved into software test engineering tools and programs.”
In 2022, Emin was offered an exciting position at Raytheon Technologies as a Sr. Automation Test Engineer. Today, he is a Head Tester and leads a team of five people, whom he guides through various projects. Emin’s advice for students: “Persist in your studies and heed the wisdom of your professors. Their wealth of knowledge and dedication to helping students are invaluable. Additionally, expanding your network is crucial for personal and professional growth.”Are you interested in a career in healthcare? Do you want to work directly with patients? Student Spotlight! Meet Olha, who made the decision to leave her country, Ukraine, at 19 and moved to the United States on her own. 🇺🇦 As soon as she arrived in the U.S., she started looking for a college where she could study graphic design. “Not every college has a Digital Multimedia Design major, but #NYSCAS does,” she said. “Because it was a private college, I knew I'd receive the individual attention I needed as an international student.” 🎨 📸
At NYSCAS, Olha has been impressed with the expertise of her professors and the breadth of knowledge they’ve been sharing in class. They took the time to help her as an ESL student while teaching incredible skills and practical knowledge relevant to multimedia design—from 2D and 3D animation to web design. “I could draw, but now I can do everything digitally. I really want to apply to Touro’s graduate school because I want to keep learning. In the long run, I would love to work at Disney as an animator,” she said. Good luck, Olha! 🌟NYSCAS alum Kinder Bradley has faced many significant obstacles in her life. Pregnant and alone at just 17 years old, she and her newborn baby found themselves homeless, seeking refuge in a subway car at night. Fortunately, she found support at Covenant House, a homeless youth services provider in NYC, where she was able to regain some stability; she secured a job, pursued a career in education, and gave birth to a daughter. Years later, however, tragedy struck when her son Jasiah was diagnosed with brain cancer.
Despite the challenges of caring for her sick child, Kinder continued to work toward her goal of becoming a teacher. She enrolled as a full-time student at #NYSCAS. She remained committed to her college classes even while dealing with the personal heartbreak of losing her brother and then her son. Following Jasiah’s passing, she became a Community Coordinator at the school she was already working at. “I applied because I know exactly what it’s like to be homeless. I always tell our parents that no matter what your situation is at home, school is going to be the most consistent thing in your child’s life so please bring them every day,” she said.
Last year, Kinder graduated from NYSCAS magna cum laude, and now she’s pursuing a master’s in counseling for mental health and wellness at NYU. She has also established a nonprofit organization called “I am your sister INC.” to mentor at-risk adolescents aged 12 and up. 📎 To read her empowering story, head to the link in bio.🏀 Touro Tornadoes Tryouts! 🌪️ Get your game on and come to our basketball tryouts!
