Simone Straws
Future Physician Assistant
The day of NYSCAS orientation, Simone Straws walked almost ten miles. That distance isn’t too unusual for Straws who works as a letter carrier at the United States Postal Service. After attending a college for musical theater in California, Straws returned to her home in the Bronx. Searching for a full-time position, she ended up working for the post office. “Four years quickly went by,” she laughed.
When Straws took her friend to the emergency room, she was treated by a physician assistant. “He told us his life story,” recalled Straws. “He was a graduate of Touro’s PA program.” Straws had always been interested in the medical field and the idea of becoming a PA appealed to her. Her final push came from an advertisement for NYSCAS on the subway. “I saw the ad and I decided to do it,” said Straws.
Straws is taking several courses this semester: composition, general survey of psychology and developmental psychology. She hopes to attend Touro’s PA school when she graduates. “You can work in so many different medical fields as a PA,” Straws said.
